The Monarchy

Belgium is a hereditary constitutional monarchy.

The King is the head of the state.

The King is above all religions, ideologies, political persuasions, debates or economic interests.

The King is the guardian of the country's unity and independence.

King Albert II ascended to the throne on August 9, 1993, becoming the 6th King of the Belgians. Albert has been married to Donna Paola Ruffo di Calabria since July 1959.

The King and Queen have 3 children.

Since a recent constitutional reform, the throne is accessible to male and female members of the Royal family.
